Reviewed a 2022 Tesla Model Y on 10 Aug 2022
I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.

Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.

Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a spacious, electric mid-sized family SUV with five seats as standard. Available in Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive variants, it offers impressive range from 311 to 387 miles depending on specification. The 2025 facelift brought a drastically different design inspired by the Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, improved suspension, better efficiency, and power-folding rear seats. It's one of the most practical cars in its class, with excellent boot space of 854 litres, a spacious frunk, and the ability to tow up to 1,600kg.
The Model Y is fast and enjoyable to drive, with responsive steering and grippy, neutral handling. The 2025 update significantly improved ride comfort, though it remains fairly firm. It's very well equipped as standard with climate control, semi-autonomous driving capabilities, keyless entry, and a panoramic glass roof. Running costs are competitive, with real-world fuel costs from 2p per mile on off-peak electricity tariffs. The Model Y remains one of the best value long-range electric SUVs available, offering excellent efficiency, rapid charging speeds, and access to Tesla's superior Supercharger network.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent range and charging infrastructure, those prioritising efficiency and low running costs, and buyers wanting comprehensive standard technology.
Not ideal for: Those requiring a head-up display, preferring a softer ride, or seeking premium interior quality comparable to BMW or Mercedes standards.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model Y | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 28.8% | 4.3/5 |

| BMW iX3 | 4/5 | N/A | 20.0% | 3.8/5 |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 29.4% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent range and charging infrastructure, prioritising efficiency and low running costs, or wanting comprehensive standard technology.
Consider alternatives if: You require a head-up display, prefer a softer ride, or seek premium interior quality comparable to BMW or Mercedes standards.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a brilliant electric family SUV that remains one of the most comprehensive options in its class. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq offers excellent value and the BMW iX3 provides superior interior quality, the Model Y's combination of spaciousness, practicality, rapid charging, and competitive pricing makes it a strong contender. The 2025 facelift has addressed previous concerns about ride comfort and cabin finish, further strengthening its position. It's no longer the default choice it once was, but it should remain near the top of any shortlist for those considering an electric SUV in this price range.
